prevent flue

Before taking steps to cure the flu it’s important to understand what flu is. A flu is a contagious respiratory illness that can affect the nose, throat and sometimes lungs. In case it gets severe, it can also lead to deaths. However, the best way to prevent flu is vaccination.

Know the symptoms

Before going ahead with the preventive measures, it’s important that you understand how the flu spreads. The virus spreads through droplets, it happens when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Once inhaled, these droplets can cause mild to severe illness. There are several symptoms to detect a flu like-

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea

Amongst these causes, fever and chills are constant.

Stats related to flu

As per a documented report in 2018, there were two methods of comparison. Both had similar findings, as per them about 8% of the US population suffered from flu each season and it ranged from around 3% to 11% depending on the seasonal factors. Another published report suggested that children were the most prone to flu, then adults and the least prone were people aged above 65 years. We are attaching below a seasonal chart of incidences of symptomatic influenza in US for better understanding-

Why is vaccination important?

This is the best method of preventing flu. This vaccination is suggested by medical professionals annually for everyone who is aged above six months. While any vaccination might not be fully equipped to completely prohibit an illness, it significantly reduces the chances and risk of severe illness.

Preventive measures

A flu vaccine is a great preventative method, however there are certain other ways in which you can shield yourself against influenza or seasonal flu! Let us walk you through all the preventative measures one can take-

  • Get a yearly flu vaccine to reduce your chances of potential infections.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are infected.
  • If you are infected, limit contact with others.
  • Practice hygiene to avoid infecting or getting infected.
  • Do not cough or sneeze in the open and keep your hands clean.
  • Use sanitizer or soap to wash your hands.
  • Avoid touching your face as the flu might spread.
  • Regularly clean and disinfect the affected area.
